Sheffield United are interested in Aston Villa's Ross Barkley, but it remains to be seen whether they can agree to his salary demands.
Sheffield United are interested in signing Aston Villa’s Ross Barkley ahead of the January transfer deadline, in what would be a statement signing for Chris Wilder.
The former England international is currently out with an injury picked up at the start of December, and he could still face a few weeks on the sidelines before he is back to full fitness.
However, reports have claimed that the Blades are monitoring Barkley, as Wilder looks to add to his midfield in the final weeks of the window.

Any deal for Barkley wouldn’t be straightforward for numerous reasons, and one potential obstacle is likely to be his salary.
Whilst we must stress that these figures are estimates, Capology states that the 31-year-old is earning £60,000 a week at Villa Park.
You would imagine that would put him out of the Blades’ price range at the minute, as he would comfortably be the highest earner, but that doesn’t mean a deal is not possible.
Obviously, Sheffield United could negotiate with Villa to pay a percentage of the salary over the next six months, and if Barkley is pushing to leave, you would expect the Premier League side to come to an agreement.
Another factor to take into consideration is that Barkley’s contract is expiring at the end of the season, so, again, talks could happen to reach an agreement.
Furthermore, if Villa don’t renew Barkley’s deal, which is likely, it means the midfielder is effectively playing for his future, so joining a club like Sheffield United, where he can play week in, week out, would benefit the 31-year-old if he is effectively putting himself in the shop window ahead of trying to find a club in the summer.
With Villa sitting third in the Premier League, still in Europe and the FA Cup, it would be a surprise if Unai Emery did sanction an exit for Barkley without at least a few new additions through the door, as they don’t exactly have the biggest squad.

But, if Sheffield United do manage to agree a deal for Barkley, it would be a fantastic move from a football perspective, particularly with doubts over the future of Gus Hamer.
Of course, his injury record this season is a concern, but Barkley is still a very capable player, and he would bring composure and technical ability to improve this Sheffield United team.
Plus, the likes of Sydie Peck and Ollie Arblaster would learn so much from having the ex-Chelsea man on the training pitch every day.
