Football League World looks at the difference in price between the two home shirts of the South Coast rivals

After Southampton were expelled from the play-offs after being found guilty of spying on Middlesbrough's training session ahead of the semi-final first leg, it was confirmed that the South Coast derby would be renewed for 2026/27.

Both Southampton and Portsmouth met in league action for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign last season.

With that season seeing both the Saints promoted to the Premier League and Pompey relegated to League One, this upcoming term will be the first time that the rivals have met in consecutive league campaigns since the mid-2000s when they were both in the top-flight.

And, given how both meetings played out last year, it would have been a real shame if the two didn't lock horns for another decade following on. Indeed, each meeting ended in a stalemate, so bragging rights are still on the line.

Neither side has won a league derby since 2005, so all eyes will be on who can strike first blood, if either, next season.

In the meantime, while we wait for the two to do battle at St Mary's on October 10, both sets of fans will be aiming to get the early upper hand, and that can be achieved in any way, shape or form.

Both sides have released their new home shirts for the 2026/27 campaign, and just like on the field last season, not much can separate the prices of the two.

Southampton's shirt is a little more modern this year, as Puma have ditched the white collar and returned to a firmer red and white striped pattern seen in more recent Saints kits. At their official store, the shirt costs £65.

Meanwhile, Nike have made the Portsmouth shirt with a smooth blue background this time around, following last year's wavy patterns. There's a nice white pattern running down the side, and the badge and sponsors are golden, rather than white.

Their store states that the shirt costs £63.95, just over a pound cheaper than Southampton's, making their shirt that little bit more affordable, albeit by a rather nominal amount in the grand scheme of things.

Nevertheless, that's one point for Pompey in pre-season over their rivals, and they'll be hoping that they can continue to win where it matters on the field next year.

Both derbies last season were played under completely different circumstances. The first, under Will Still, saw two sides battling down at the bottom of the division, and it was a cagey affair at St Mary's with few chances and the game finishing 0-0.

The reverse at Fratton Park in late January didn't feature the Southampton side at the peak of their powers under Tonda Eckert, but the game was a lot more entertaining.

Ebou Adams cancelled out Leo Scienza's opener, who made sure to goad the Pompey fans all across the stadium in his celebration. More of the same will definitely be on the cards next season.

After a couple of draws, both sides will be eager to get three points on the board at the expense of their bitter rivals, and the gloves will definitely be off at St Mary's a couple of months into the campaign.
