Newcastle United return to European action on Wednesday night with a clear target in mind as they host PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park.
With only two games left in the Champions League league phase, Eddie Howe’s side know that a strong finish could still lift them into the top eight and secure automatic progress.
The Magpies currently sit 12th in the Champions League standings on 10 points, just three points outside the top eight. It leaves little margin for error, but also plenty of reason for belief.
Newcastle have blown hot and cold in the Premier League, but they’ve looked far more confident in the Champions League, even though they’re looking to snap a two-game winless streak.
The Mapgies have won three of their six League Phase fixtures (D1, L2), but they’re still firmly in the mix.
A home clash with PSV now offers the Magpies a crucial chance to build momentum before a daunting final game away to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Newcastle also need to get back to winning ways after their last two games.
They’re heading into this fixture on the back of a frustrating goalless draw against Premier League basement team Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The goalless draw came after a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash.
However, St. James’ Park has a way of inspiring Newcastle and should do so again, particularly with qualification on the line.
Howe could make four changes from the side that drew Wolves last time out.
Nick Pope should retain his place in goal while Lewis Miley comes in for Kieran Trippier to partner Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, and Lewis Hall in defence.
Howe will likely continue with his preferred midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton. But there could be changes across the front line.
Nick Woltemade hasn’t scored for Newcastle since bagging a brace against Chelsea, taking his goal drought up to nine games in all competitions.
That drop in form could cost him his spot in the starting XI with Yoane Wissa primed to step in. Anthony Gordon could also make way for Anthony Elanga while Harvey Barnes moves to the left flank.
