Newcastle United are looking to return to winning ways this weekend as they visit the newly opened Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on Saturday evening.
The Magpies have alternated between victory and defeat across their last six games – a run that started with a 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup fourth round.
A spirited 2-1 victory over Manchester City at St James’ Park briefly lifted the mood, but it was quickly dampened by a 2-1 defeat away to Olympique Marseille in the Champions League.
Harvey Barnes has at least rediscovered his eye for goal. After going 16 games without scoring, he has now scored four times in three outings, including a well-taken opener in France.
However, Newcastle’s defensive errors allowed former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to flip the match with two rapid goals early in the second half.
Aubameyang’s heroics condemned Newcastle to their fourth consecutive defeat away from home across all competitions.
In fact, Newcastle are one of only three Premier League sides yet to win away from home this season, and their run of nine winless league trips is their longest in nearly a decade.
The Magpies now sit 14th in the table and are trailing Everton by three points.
But that could be a blessing in disguise, considering the Magpies are unbeaten in their last six league games against Everton when starting below them.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will likely make two changes to the side that lost against Marseille.
Nick Pope has come under intense scrutiny for his role in that midweek loss, but Howe leaped to his defence during his pre-match press conference, so the goalkeeper will likely keep his place in goal.
With Sven Botman doubtful to face Everton, Fabian Schar could return to the XI to partner Malick Thiaw at the heart of the defence, while Dan Burn and Tino Livramento line up on the flanks.
A familiar midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton should start against Everton, but there could be changes up front.
Anthony Gordon is set to make his first Premier League appearance in nearly three weeks. The “excellent” winger will likely be joined by Nick Woltemade and in-form Harvey Barnes.
