Newcastle United will be looking to build on their European momentum when they welcome Fulham to St. James’ Park for Saturday afternoon’s mouth-watering Premier League encounter.
The Magpies are coming off a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica side, courtesy of a first-half goal from Anthony Gordon and a second-half brace from Harvey Barnes.
Eddie Howe will hope his side can carry that momentum into the Premier League as Newcastle go hunting for back-to-back victories in all competitions.
Newcastle have had a rough start to the season after winning just two of their opening eight games.
They sit 15th in the Premier League and will hope their resounding victory in midweek sparks a resurgence that shoots them up the ladder where they want to be.
Newcastle are hovering dangerously above the drop zone, and Howe knows his side cannot afford another slip-up, having won just one of their last four Premier League games (D1, L2).
Saturday’s outing is effectively a must-win, and Howe must figure out a formula to get all three points without a number of key players.
Howe is also expected to make three changes from the side that beat Benfica in midweek. While Nick Pope will retain his place between the sticks, there should be changes across the other areas.
The only change from the backline should see Fabian Schar come in for Malick Thiaw, with Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, and Dan Burn rounding up the back four.
Full-back duo Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall have returned to training but still need to build up match fitness before marking their comeback, which rules them out of Saturday’s outing.
In midfield, Joelinton should come in for Jacob Ramsey, with Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley retaining their spot, although Sandro Tonali could replace the latter if he passes a late fitness test.
The only change from the front three should come on the right flank, with Barnes rewarded for his goalscoring exploits in midweek.
The £39 million forward will likely line up alongside Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade.
