What a turnaround it has been for Patrick Dorgu over the last couple of months at Manchester United.
Not too long ago, Ruben Amorim called him out for his lack of quality in the final third. For a 21-year-old in a new country and a vastly superior league, the head coach’s words must have stung.
“You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel the anxiety,” the Portuguese tactician had said after the Everton game.
That was in late November. Instead of taking Amorim’s criticisms to heart, the Dane revealed that he did not mind the harsh words, instead using them as fuel to further his journey.
He was aided by senior United stars, who supported him during those difficult moments. And finally, fans are seeing why the club went ahead and plucked him out of Serie A when very few had heard his name before.
In the last six league games, the Denmark international has two goals and as many assists, including a stunning strike against Manchester City in the derby.
As revealed by The Manchester Evening News, the ex-Lecce star is really putting in the hard yards to convince Michael Carrick to hand him further opportunities.
“When Amorim was sacked at the beginning of the month, his ruthless comment about Dorgu was cited by United sources, who admitted that senior club figures had been unhappy with it.
“Dorgu has character and demonstrated steeliness to shake off Amorim’s criticism in November, which might have caused greater harm to 21-year-old without the same mental fortitude.
“Instead of sulking, Dorgu has trained to prove Amorim wrong. A source said the Dane “does loads of extras” and credited him for working “really hard”.
“It’s understood there has been a focus on improving Dorgu’s crosses, with an emphasis on him perfecting his technique during training at Carrington.”
Patrick Dorgu has played all across the pitch, as a wingback on either flank as well as on the both wings.
Now for him to try and cement his place among the attacking quartet with another strong showing against Arsenal next weekend.
