Serie A’s title race is the most exciting among Europe’s top five league this season.
Inter Milan’s last-gasp defeat at Bologna at the weekend allowed Napoli to claw back the gap, as Scott McTominay struck the winner for the latter at Verona. Napoli’s 1-0 win moved Antonio Conte’s side level on points with Inter, though behind the champions on goal difference in the table.
However, Serie A rules do not determine the outcome of teams that are level on points via goal difference. The head-to-head record of the sides in the league is used as the determining factor, a scenario which has led to a potentially dramatic conclusion to the campaign.
Both league fixtures between Inter Milan and Napoli ended 1-1 this season, opening up the prospect of a title-deciding play-off between the sides at the season’s end.
Currently tied on points, if the campaign ends with the teams still level they will face off in a play-off match to decide the Scudetto.
The team with the best goal difference will play at home in the match, while the contest will be decided on penalties if the teams draw in the 90 minutes.
A Serie A title decided on penalties? It would be unprecedented drama.
