Rasmus Kristensen’s switch to Frankfurt helped pave the way for Leeds United to sign Jean-Matteo Bahoya on deadline day, the winger arriving on loan with a conditional obligation attached.

The club said on its website that sporting director Underwood established a strong line to Frankfurt counterpart Timmo Hardung, first while arranging Kristensen’s move and then during discussions over goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

Underwood’s first deal in the role was Kristensen to Frankfurt, and that relationship later eased talks for Bahoya. During negotiations for Zetterer, Leeds learned Bahoya could be available and was keen, and they used deadline day to agree short-term terms they liked. He said a month, or even a week, earlier Frankfurt would have pushed for a fixed fee.

Leeds agreed a loan from Frankfurt with an easily met conditional obligation. It is believed the trigger is appearance-based, and, if activated, Leeds will pay £26m to sign the France U21 international permanently.

Kristensen, who arrived under Jesse Marsch in 2022 and struggled in Yorkshire, was among eight players to activate Victor Orta’s relegation loan clause. He left with Diego Llorente for Roma, then joined Frankfurt on loan before making the move permanent. Bahoya has made one Leeds appearance.
