An insight into the role played by Real Madrid in the decision of departing star Luka Modrić to join his next club has on Wednesday been provided.

This comes amid the widespread understanding that the Croatian is on the verge of penning terms with AC Milan.

The name of veteran midfielder Modrić has of course dominated the headlines across all of Europe for several weeks now.

This comes after confirmation that Real Madrid had made the call not to offer the 39-year-old a new contract was followed by swift links with a whole host of clubs across the continent.

Over the last 48 hours, though, Modrić has whittled down his many options to just one – AC Milan.

The Rossoneri are expected to announce a deal for the former Tottenham man any day now, after Modrić made clear his desire to make the move to San Siro.

‘Milan won’t be playing in European competition next season. His emotional connection to the club is deep, and he can’t imagine competing against the team coached by Xabi Alonso.’
