Chris Wilder has given his assessment of Sheffield United's summer business.
Chris Wilder has revealed that he’s happy with the transfer business done by ex-Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles, and revealed he would've signed many of them if he'd stayed in charge over the summer transfer window.
The 57-year-old is back in charge at Bramall Lane after departing the club following the end of the previous campaign.
He was replaced by Ruben Selles, who oversaw the Yorkshire outfit’s transfer business, which included the arrivals of the two defenders.
But with Wilder now back at the helm, he will have to coach the squad that has been left behind by the Spaniard, who was dismissed after five straight defeats in the league to start the term.
Sheffield United made 14 signings in total, meaning the squad looks quite different from the one that the veteran coach left behind after the play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May.
Wilder has revealed that he would’ve signed Tanganga and Mee if he had been in charge of Sheffield United during the summer market.
He also cited Chiedozie Ogbene as a player he previously wanted to bring to Bramall Lane, expressing his delight at the moves the club made in the transfer window.
“There had always been, in my opinion, the necessity of signing some of the players that the club have signed,” said Wilder, via The Star.
“And I've got to say, I think the club have been incredibly ambitious and put their hand in the pocket in terms of what they've done.
"Would I have signed Japhet Tanganga? 100 per cent. If Robbo (Jack Robinson) had gone, would I have signed Ben Mee? 100 per cent.
“The club tried to sign Chieo before he went to Luton. He was living in Kelham Island and the club tried to do it, but they missed out on it.
"I see his career and his profile, and he's a good Sheffield United player.”
Wilder also cited additions like Tahith Chong and Mark McGuinness as smart moves made by the club, as well as Alex Matos and Nils Zatterstrom: “Chong we all know about, Mark McGuinness we all know about.
“He played over the road [for United’s rivals Wednesday] and did very well for the team down the road.
“He's a good player, an experienced Championship player. It's putting them all together. Nils, the boy from Sweden ... I would have signed Nils.
“He was in the system before. They're good signings that we can develop with our academy players, with players we've signed.
“Young Alex Matos has got a great CV from Chelsea and he'd have been on the radar as well.
“The group that's been put together is a talented group now. The key is for them to show it and me to try and bring that out of them. And 100 per cent I believe we can do.”
Sheffield United made a disastrous start to the new season under Selles, with the Spaniard overseeing five defeats in a row in the league.
This led to Wilder’s return, with the Yorkshire outfit hoping he can turnaround their form and get the team back in contention for promotion to the Premier League.
Wilder guided the Blades to a third place finish in the Championship in the previous campaign, but a 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the play-off final led to his departure from Bramall Lane.
Someone like Ogbene is a great example of someone that will suit Wilder’s style of football very well, so he should have no problems with the squad he’s inherited.
It is an awkward situation for the 57-year-old as his team was overhauled in the summer, but he didn’t get a say in any of the players that were brought in.
However, he has eased a lot of concerns over that by highlighting how highly he rates those who have arrived at the club.
Players like Tanganga and McGuinness could both thrive under Wilder, so fans will be optimistic about his return in place of Selles.
Wilder's appointment will surely galvanise the Sheffield United support given how popular of a figure he is at Bramall Lane, and could be the ideal tonic to what has been a disastrous start to the season.
As such, he will undoubtedly transmit the passion and intensity required to the Blades dressing room, and could well elicit improved performances from a host of players, which could negate the negatives of him not being able to sign his players this summer.
Hearing their new boss reaffirm his confidence in their ability and put his neck on the line for them by affirming that he would've looked to sign them as well as Selles could be a genius stroke of man-management from Wilder, but it could also backfire if some of said signings aren't able to find their feet as United players.
Time will tell on that front, but he's obviously confident in the new signings brought in from the brief Selles regime, and will now look to form a squad that can banish their poor start, and evolve into a group that can win promotion this season.
