Chelsea are expected to return with an improved offer for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka in the coming days. New manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be pushing the move for the former Arsenal midfielder after their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen, and Xhaka is said to be keen on a reunion ahead of the new season.

Xhaka remains a Sunderland player after an initial £8m bid was immediately rejected by the Stadium of Light hierarchy, who reiterated the Switzerland international is not for sale. Chelsea are expected to come back with £10m to £12.5m plus add-ons, still below the £17.5m Sunderland paid after he won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Leverkusen. According to Transfermarkt, Manchester City and Arsenal currently lead the Premier League for squad value, with Chelsea close behind.

The situation continues to dominate as the summer window gathers pace, and Sunderland are working to strengthen for a first ever Europa League campaign. Xhaka played a key role in last season’s seventh-place Premier League finish.

Current valuations list City at €1.39bn, Arsenal at €1.31bn and Chelsea at €1.288bn. Sunderland’s squad is valued at €391.18m.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United follow in the next bracket by value. Any move to Stamford Bridge would, by definition, alter both clubs’ totals.
