Sydie Peck wants to repay the faith shown in him by Sheffield United after their EFL Cup win over Mansfield Town

Sydie Peck has insisted that his focus remains on Sheffield United, amidst transfer talk about the England Under-21 international moving on from Bramall Lane this summer.

In a summer when the Blades have needed to recoup fees as they navigate the new SCR financial rules and life as a Championship club without Premier League parachute payments, Peck's status as arguably the club's most saleable asset almost makes a departure seem inevitable.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the Championship's brightest young midfielders over the past two seasons, and with him arriving as a 16-year-old from Arsenal back in 2021 and progressing through the Blades youth ranks, would represent a brilliant way to make a hefty profit this summer.

Interest from second-tier rivals West Ham United and Premier League outfit Brentford, managed by former Sheffield United coach Keith Andrews, has been reported throughout the summer, but for now, Peck is a Blade, and that's his main focus as the season begins.

Sheffield United have already bid farewell to Andre Brooks in an £8 million deal to fellow second-tier side Norwich City, and Gustavo Hamer is in the process of finalising a return to Coventry City in a deal worth £6 million.

As it stands, though, the interest surrounding Peck is just that, and while the 21-year-old could have deemed himself unavailable for selection to try and force a move away, he instead played in their 3-0 EFL Cup first-round win at Mansfield Town on Sunday.

Following the game, per the Sheffield Star, Peck spoke about his future and about how he still has a lot to "pay back" to Sheffield United for putting him in the position where clubs are after his signature this summer.

"I joined when I was 16, and the gaffer's given me every debut since," he said. "From the Premier League to the Championship and in the cup. The staff as well, I've got a lot of stuff to pay back. They've helped me become the player I am today.

"Since I joined, I've always felt at home. They've helped me in many ways. I just want to keep repaying that and winning games of football for this club and helping contribute.

"All the talk and things like that. I've got a Sheffield United shirt on now. I'm a Sheffield United player. I'm signed to Sheffield United. That's my aim. My head's down."

In a summer where Sheffield United fans have had to fear the worst surrounding the future of their top players, hearing Peck lay down his loyalties for the time being has been quite a relief.

The 21-year-old was serenaded numerous times during the cup win at Mansfield in the stands, and that was reflected online following the game in response to his interview.

"God I love him," a Blades fan account tweeted. "If only we could have 11 Sydie Pecks! Some boyy," another added.

There were plenty of tweets imploring Sheffield United to make Peck their captain ahead of the new campaign, too, a role currently held by Japhet Tanganga.

If the 21-year-old remains a Blade past the end of the transfer window, that dedication and commitment to the club would increase those shouts tenfold.

"If we get through the window and Peck is still a Sheffield United footballer, he should be the captain. Fans adore him," one fan commented, while another added, "Losing Hamer is one thing; we need Peck, surely we need to be offering Sydie a new contract."

With Hamer's departure imminent, there isn't much excitement surrounding Sheffield United ahead of the new campaign — at least not as much as there has been in recent second-tier terms they were set to embark on.

However, even with the former Championship Player of the Season and their most creative outlet moving on, Chris Wilder still has some solid, top-end second-tier stars to call upon heading into the new league campaign this Saturday.

Peck is right at the top of that list, and with him outlining his commitment to the club on Sunday, it shows that he likely won't be exploring a move himself.

That doesn't mean that the club won't be seeing the possibility of making a profit on him as something they can't turn down this summer, though. A transfer could be made between now and September 1, but from the player's side, it seems that Peck is happy staying put.
