How to watch and more of Gotham FC’s 2026 season opener against Boston Legacy

The last time NJ/NY Gotham FC took the field in the NWSL, the Bats won the 2025 NWSL Championship for the second time in three years.  Now, the team will play in the 2026 season opener this weekend when they take on Boston Legacy FC, one of the two expansion sides.  This will begin the journey of a title defense, but the NJ/NY side will also want to do better in the regular season.

As always, it is difficult to pinpoint what type of team Boston will be since the NWSL side will be playing their first match.  There are some talented players on the roster, and Gotham knows two of them pretty well since they were on last year’s roster: Josefine Hasbo and Ella Stevens.  This will be a brief reunion, but of course, it has not been that long since the two wore the black and sky blue shirts.  Other standouts on the Legacy include, but are not limited to, Casey Murphy, Nichelle Prince, and Bianca St-Georges.

Nevertheless, it is clear that Gotham FC will want to upset the party of Boston’s home opener and first NWSL game.  The Bats arguably have more stars in their squad, and thanks to consistency with most of the roster from 2025, their chemistry is clearly eons ahead compared to the new team.  Plus, on paper, based on the players available, the NJ/NY side is arguably stronger.

As always, anything can happen.  The main concern for the Bats is that the team has had slow starts to begin campaigns.  If Gotham FC wants to start the season with a win, they will need to score.  That is vital for the opener.

Final notes

With the exception of Taryn Torres, who is on the SEI list, Gotham FC is mostly healthy entering the game.  Ideally, this will be the start of a season with little to no injuries, especially for the starters.  Of course, the team will reveal who is on the injury list, let alone if anyone else is on there.  It would be good for the Bats to have a clean bill of health, except for Torres, and possibly Tierna Davidson, who might not be game-day ready.
