London rivals go head to head with plenty at stake
Arsenal face Chelsea today looking to consolidate their place at the top of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta’s side are five points clear at the summit of Manchester City as the title race intensifies.
The Gunners returned to winning ways in their 4-1 north London derby demolition job of Tottenham last week, having dropped points against Brentford and Wolves to allow City to eat away at the gap.
They face a Chelsea side fuelled by frustration after Liam Rosenior’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley last time out.
Zian Flemming netted a late equaliser as the Blues lost ground in the race to finish in the Champions League places, giving Manchester United an opportunity to get away from them.
Michael Carrick’s Red Devils duly did so on Monday, beating Everton 1-0, and that leaves United three points ahead of Chelsea as their unbeaten run under Carrick continued.
Arteta has suffered a recent spate of injuries to make his task trickier, with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Ben White all recent concerns.
That adds to the long-term absence of Mikel Merino, who is out following surgery on a stress fracture in his foot.
There is some positive news for Gunners fans in that teenage sensation Max Dowman could finally return from his prolonged lay-off, having sustained an ankle injury that has kept him out for two months.
