Aston Villa host Newcastle United in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend, with both sides chasing their first FA Cup triumph since the mid-1950s.

The two sides met in the Premier League at St James Park just under three weeks ago and Villa will be hoping to emulate their 2-1 victory.

Recent form

Aston Villa have won just two of their last six Premier League games, but remain third in the table, seven points off the top.

Villa secured a 2–1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur in January to set up this FA Cup fourth-round clash and come into the game off the back of a 1–0 league victory at home against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Newcastle United also won 2–1 at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, recording their first league victory since the start of January.

Newcastle will be determined to avoid another domestic cup setback after the holders were eliminated from the Carabao Cup semi-finals, losing 5–1 on aggregate to Manchester City.

What’s been said?

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on his side’s injury problems: “We have enough players to replace as a midfielder, to replace as well, full-back, Andrés (García) and Matty Cash, with the players we have.

“And two months ago, we were without Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres, and (Victor) Lindelöf played fantastic – some matches in a row.

“This is our work, this is something (that) makes me more intense in my focus each match with the possibility we can have and to get the performance as soon as possible.

“The players, they are ready to play, and they are always opening their mind to try to help us in different positions, being versatile.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said: “We would love to have a cup run, our attitude won’t change, we want to try and win the next game and that is Aston Villa. It is a tough draw, a competition we want to do well in, and we want to go as far as we can.”
