England struggled in their opening game of Euro 2025, losing 2-1 to France but they bounced back in style to defeat the Netherlands 4-0 before securing qualification for the last eight with a comprehensive 6-1 win over rivals Wales. The Lionesses then came from 2-0 down to eventually beat Sweden on penalties in the quarter-finals before coming from a goal down to beat Italy 2-1 in extra time in the semi-final to reach the final.
Spain started off Euro 2025 with a dominant 5-0 win against Portugal, before following that up with a 6-2 demolition of Belgium in their second group match. They rounded off their Group B campaign with a 3-1 win over Italy. The Spanish would go on to beat Group A runners up Switzerland 2-0 in the quarter-finals before dramatically beating Germany in the semi-finals thanks to Aitana Bonmati’s 113th minute winner to see them through to the final.
England XI (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Morgan; Walsh, Stanway; Kelly, Toone, Hemp; Russo.
Spain XI (4-3-3): Cata Coll; Batlle, Paredes, Aleixandri, Olga; Bonmatí, Patri, Alexia; Mariona, Pina, Esther González.
England manager Sarina Wiegman spoke on how stressful this Euros campaign has been:
“I’m having a heart-attack too, I just don’t show it,” she joked. “We try to prepare for the game and what we might need in certain circumstances if we need to change things. It’s what we talk about all the time. We have spoken about all the scenarios, but during the game it’s what we feel is necessary. What we want is that when we need to change we can do it very quick.”
Spain manager Montse Tomé says this has been a historic campaign for her team ahead of their first Euros final:
“During the whole tournament we have been writing history. Getting to the semis and the final for the first time, beating Germany for the first time. We have been accomplishing objectives and that’s the reason we’re here.”
