Freiburg finished the Bundesliga with an emphatic 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, securing UEFA Conference League qualification. The German side have been inconsistent at times this season but they will hope to perform at their best in the club’s first-ever European final and with the opportunity to claim their first-ever major title.
Aston Villa defeated Liverpool 4-2 last time out, moving up to fourth in the Premier League and confirming their qualification for next season’s Champions League. The only concerns for Unai Emery were possible injuries to Victor Lindelof and Emiliano Buendia, with the former substituted at half-time and the latter forced off late on. Despite that, Villa have been in fine form in recent big matches and will come into the final full of confidence.
“We’re aware that Unai Emery is the most successful coach in the history of the tournament,” said Freiburg manager Maximilian Eggestein. “But that was with Sevilla and Villarreal so we haven’t analysed that – only his Aston Villa team is relevant to us.”
“We are confident, but we are so, so respectful,” said Villa boss Emery. “Always, we are so, so respectful with Europa League, with the teams we are facing, and tomorrow, Freiburg, they are here because they deserve it.”
