Chelsea’s Carabao Cup campaign begins with an awkward trip to League One Lincoln City, who are unbeaten in their last ten matches.
It will be the first meeting between the two sides in over a century – since a 0-0 draw back in 1911. More recently, a Chelsea U21 team featuring both Reece James and Trevor Chalobah did make the journey up to Lincoln in 2018. The Blues lost on penalties that night after a 1-1 draw.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the clash…

Lincoln have been on a strong run of form and have not lost a match since early August. The Imps defeated Luton Town at the weekend and currently sit third in League One.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have lost twice in the past week. Their Champions League campaign began with a defeat away against Bayern Munich. Then, on Saturday, the Blues succumbed to a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford after receiving an early red card.
Ahead of the match, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca reflected on his side’s league defeat at the weekend.
“I hope we don’t have more games where we are down to 10 players after three minutes,” he said. “But the game was dictated by the red card. When it was 10 vs 10 we had almost 70% possession.
“It was difficult for us and for any club in the world to play 100 minutes with 10 players.”
After his team’s victory on Saturday, Lincoln manager Michael Skubala declared: “Now we recover, refresh and we go again and put a match plan together with a group of players with the idea to go out and win a game of football.”
