In recent seasons, meetings between Liverpool and Manchester City have often been billed as title deciders, and while Liverpool are not currently in contention, a win for the Reds could leave City’s title hopes effectively over.

The two sides meet again this Sunday at Anfield in what could prove a defining clash of the season.

Recent form

Manchester City set up a mouth-watering Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, after they cruised to a 5-1 aggregate victory over Newcastle United.

However, City have just one victory in their last six league games, and go into this game nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool’s up and down form this season continued, but they responded to a 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth two weeks ago with an emphatic 4-1 win over Newcastle in their last game.

What’s been said

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said: “We have very good players, but almost every team in the Premier League has as well. The development of the team, how we are able to play against them now, is very helpful [to see where we’re at].

“We showed most of the season that we are able to compete with any team that we have faced, but unfortunately we haven’t shown the consistency to get consistent results, but I think we’ve shown that we are able to compete, except for large parts of the first half against City earlier this season where they were better than us.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: “Liverpool remain an exceptional team. A top class manager and an exceptional team, no doubt.

“I have tried to see how they have played lately. What we have to do, if we have to adjust something. But it is Anfield. The biggest stages and the biggest games always need big personalities. I have said many times, it’s not about the skills of the players in the top leagues.

“In the top clubs the skills are there. I never know one player that is not good enough to play in the top clubs, it is how you behave. How you play in the latter stages of the biggest competitions is what defines you as a player. The mind of the players you have defines the big teams.”
