Old Trafford hosts high-profile north-west derby as both clubs look to guarantee Champions League qualification
Manchester United and Liverpool renew hostilities as English football’s most famous rivalry takes centre stage once more at Old Trafford today.
Both sides go into the latest edition of the north-west derby with confidence and knowing that they could each clinch Champions League qualification this afternoon.
United currently sit three points ahead of their arch-rivals in third - with a narrowly superior goal difference - after making it nine wins in 13 games under the interim management of Michael Carrick with a 2-1 home victory over Brentford on Monday night in which Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko were both on target and captain Bruno Fernandes moved within one more assist of equalling the all-time Premier League record of 20.
It has left the Red Devils needing just two more points from their remaining four fixtures to guarantee a return to European football’s top table next term as Carrick continues to make a strong case as to why he should succeed Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis this summer despite recent speculation regarding the likes of Andoni Iraola and Luis Enrique.

Fourth-place Liverpool, meanwhile, have enjoyed a domestic resurgence over recent weeks to ease the intense pressure on manager Arne Slot, winning three league matches in a row, including a dramatic last-gasp victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Like United, the Reds could also secure their Champions League place this weekend with three matches to spare, though they need to win and hope that other results involving Brighton and Bournemouth go their way.
TV channel: In the UK, Manchester United vs Liverpool is being televised live on Sky Sports. Coverage begins on Sky Sports Main Event at 2pm BST and Sky Sports Premier League at 2:30pm, ahead of an earlier 3:30pm kick-off at Old Trafford enforced for security reasons.
