Aston Villa face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday as the two sides meet for the first piece of silverware of the new season.

Villa qualified for the showpiece after winning the Europa League last season, while PSG lifted the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Aston Villa v PSG takes place on Wednesday, August 12, with kick-off at 8pm BST.

Aston Villa team news

Villa will be without Emi Martínez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins for the clash.

The trio only finished their World Cup campaigns on July 19 and manager Unai Emery has given them four weeks to rest before returning to action.

“They are not here – Konsa, Watkins and Martínez because they finished their season on 19th July and I gave them four weeks to rest, it’s completely necessary,” Emery said.

Ousmane Dembele, Désiré Doué, Fabián Ruiz, Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lucas Hernández and Achraf Hakimi are all doubts having only recently returned following their post-World Cup breaks.

What has Unai Emery said?

Emery admitted Villa would have a better chance of winning if Martínez, Konsa and Watkins were available, but believes his side can still compete.

“Of course, if they were here, maybe we could have more chances,” he said.

“But, at the same time, I think PSG are going to be in the same situation like us.

“And tomorrow I expect to compete and try to face them with our capacity and our possibilities as well to beat them.

“Of course, they are favourites.”

What has Luis Enrique said?

“We are pleased to be here because it means we did a good job last season, but ​in terms of preparation it is very difficult to manage.

“The internationals have only ​just come back, the French, Spanish and Moroccans came back on Monday, the Brazilians and Portuguese on the third, one week ago. It is a situation generated by the schedule.

“In terms of a top-level game tomorrow, it will be difficult to see ​that. Some of our players have barely trained but the ones who have will play tomorrow. In ​terms of preparation, this is not how it should be.”
