Recent form

Qarabag are second in their domestic league, and have won 14 of 20 league games this season, scoring 36 times.

They have only lost twice since December 19, one of those being a 6-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Newcastle have won their last two games against Aston Villa and Tottenham, two tough fixtures, which have signalled that Eddie Howe may well be able to turn things around.

Fans had been losing confidence in Howe after a run of one win in nine before those recent two wins.

What’s been said?

Qarabag manager Qurban Qurbanov on condition of pitches: “We say let our football develop, but maybe with these words they will do something to improve the condition of the stadium. We have nothing to depend on, we want normal football to be played.

“Straight up, l’ve wasted the power of four games on these last two away games. We will not be ready for the game with Newcastle, I say it in advance.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said: “I watched a lot of Qarabag in the build-up to this game and I watched both of (their games against Liverpool and Chelsea).

“The Liverpool scoreline was not reflective of the game at all – they made a really good, bright start to that game, had a number of chances, were really threatening with the ball, showed that high technical level. They’ve got some dangerous players.”
