Los Blancos in midst of injury crisis ahead of European opener

Real Madrid open their 2026/27 Champions League campaign this evening, hosting Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It has been a summer of change for Los Blancos, who have a new manager in Jose Mourinho and a wealth of fresh faces in the squad.

Among their number are Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomande, and Denzel Dumfries, who stands to face his former club at the first opportunity.

Mourinho is under pressure to better last season’s quarter-final finish, where Real lost 6-4 on aggregate to Bayern Munich, with Los Blancos’ wait to win this competition now approaching three years.

Inter also have something of a point to prove here. They were stunned in the knock-out play-off last season by Bodo/Glimt, losing 5-2, the season after being routed in the final by Paris Saint-Germain.

The Nerazzurri have made a notably positive start to the new season, though, cruising past Monza and Cagliari before edging Napoli 3-2 in their first big test of the campaign.

Facing an ailing Real, who could be without as many as ten first-team players on Tuesday and were beaten in frustrating circumstances by Real Betis last time out, they will hope to pick up a surprise result.
