Spain and Argentina meet for one final time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the two global giants battle it out for the title in New York.

Spain reached their second ever World Cup final after comfortably beating France 2-0, whilst current holders Argentina battled back from a goal down to beat England 2-1.

Argentina will be looking to win back-to-back titles, and their fourth in total, whilst Spain will be looking to hold both the World Cup and European Championship titles at the same time for the second time in their history.

Team news

Spain have no fitness issues after their victory over France. Nico Williams continued his recovery from injury with more minutes against the French, whilst fears over Lamine Yamal after picking up a knock in the semi-final were quashed by manager Luis de la Fuente.

Argentina also have a clean bill of health ahead of the final after coming through their semi-final unscathed.

Recent form

Both sides were victorious in their semi-finals, after wins over France and England respectably. Prior to that, Spain had faced off against Belgium, Portugal and Austria in the knockouts, whilst Argentina overcame Switzerland, Egypt and Cape Verde before winning their semi-final clash.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente: “Lamine has to be Lamine. Messi can never be repeated. He is an extraordinary talent and above all an example for young players in his attitude, his behaviour, the spectacular World Cup he is producing and the age at which he is producing it. It will be a great show between two super teams. It will be a game of talent, brilliance, great play.”

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni: “He’s [Messi] pure history. History, a legend… I’m not sure what else to add. The fact those words were said to me is irrelevant – they were meant for everyone. It makes me so proud that the best footballer the world has ever seen thinks that – it’s just wonderful. To have reached a final the way he’s done at the age of 39, that’s quite the feat.

That’s why I said we should enjoy it. We felt the absence of Diego [Maradona] long after he hung up his boots. Well, Messi’s still with us, and we have to cherish what he does.”
