Two heavyweights face off in the biggest match of the football calendar

World Cup will come to a close this evening as Spain and Argentina face off in the final.

The match pitches the reigning world champions against the holders of the European Championships.

Spain stunned popular favourites France in the semi-final, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Tottenham’s Pedro Porro, but now face an even tougher test as they look to clinch their second World Cup title and first since 2010.

Argentina, meanwhile, beat France in the final last time out in Qatar, but have made a habit of leaving it late to win matches this year.

They required extra time to get the better of Cape Verde in the last-32, overturned Egypt’s two-goal advantage in the last-16, and again came from behind to beat England in the semi-final. A 3-1 defeat of Switzerland in the quarter-finals also necessitated extra time.

They will hope to get the job done in normal time at the final in New York tonight, though, in a long-running event which will also feature a closing ceremony and half-time show.
