Switzerland hope to continue an historic run, while world champions Spain aim for a maiden Euro glory
World Cup holders Spain face tournament hosts Switzerland Stadion Wankdorf this evening for a spot in the Euro 2025 semi-finals.
The Spanish - the No2-ranked women’s football team in the world - are unbeaten so far in this tournament, having knocked a total of 14 goals past Portugal, Belgium and Italy in the group stage while conceding just three times.
But the Swiss, despite only scraping through to the knockout rounds on goal difference, will have the home crowd on their side in what could be a boisterous night in Bern.
It marks Switzerland’s first appearance in a European Championship quarter-final, while Spain’s previous best run at this tournament is their semi-final showing back in 1997.
Last time out, La Roja were knocked out in the Euro 2022 quarter-finals by eventual winners England. They have since beaten the Lionesses in both the 2023 Women’s World Cup final and more recently the Nations League - but Montse Tome’s team will not face Sarina Wiegman’s until the final, if both teams makes it that far.
Before then, the winners of this tie, be it Spain or Switzerland, will come up against either France or Germany in the semi-finals.
This is the first meeting between these two sides in over a decade, rendering their previous head-to-head record - which sees Spain on top with four wins to Switzerland’s three, as well as one draw - less than relevant.
