There was a lot of optimism that Blues could make back-to-back promotions following their record-breaking League One title win, but they had endured an inconsistent start to the campaign.

Whilst there are still some issues to iron out, Birmingham are now starting to click, particularly at home, and they continued their good form on their own patch with a narrow victory against the Hornets.

A goal from Paik Seung-ho gave the hosts the lead just after the half-hour mark, and a fine Demarai Gray effort had put Birmingham in a commanding position before Othmane Maamma pulled one back to ensure a nervy ending.

But, Blues stood firm to pick up a huge three points, and Wagner was quick to share his thoughts on the win on his Instagram story.

A perfect way to end a Monday night. Keep. Right. On.”

The win means only Coventry have a better home record than Blues in the Championship, with Hull City the only side to take maximum points from St. Andrew’s.

This was by no means a stellar performance from Birmingham, but they did enough to get the victory, and to be successful at this level, you must be able to grind out results.

We know that the owners at Birmingham have huge ambition, and the fans will be extremely excited about what the future holds for the club as they prepare to move into a new 62,00 seater stadium down the line.

Yet, to achieve the ultimate goals of the hierarchy, the priority is always going to be success on the pitch, and the start to the campaign will have been underwhelming for Birmingham.

But, that was perhaps to be expected given the new players that had come into the group, and it appears that they are now starting to get things right.

Clearly, Wagner enjoyed the win over Watford, and his enthusiasm and visibility around the club is key to driving standards on a day-to-day basis.

Now, the challenge is to build on this, and if there is an issue with Birmingham right now, it’s that they are a different team away from home.

So, Davies will be demanding a big display from his team at Southampton on Saturday, in what will be a stern test for Birmingham, but it offers a great chance to show their promotion credentials against another in-form team.
