Tyrhys Dolan made the move from Blackburn to Espanyol during the summer transfer window
Tyrhys Dolan made the switch from Blackburn Rovers to Espanyol over the summer following the expiration of his contract.
The winger opted to depart Ewood Park instead of renewing terms, ending his association with the Championship side without earning them a significant transfer fee.
The 23-year-old has made the move to Spanish football, taking his first steps out of England in his career.
He was one of several exits at Ewood Park, with the likes of Callum Brittain and Lewis Travis also moving away from Valerien Ismael’s side.
But he was the only one of Rovers’ major player exits last summer that moved to another European league instead of within English football.
Here we take a look at how the winger is doing at his new club following the start of the new league season.
Dolan made the switch to Espanyol during the summer after he failed to agree terms on a contract renewal with Blackburn.
Dolan also contributed seven goals and six assists in the Championship last year, meaning a crucial part of Blackburn’s attack departed for nothing. The 23-year-old has yet to register a goal or assist in Spain, with only three games played for most teams in the division.
But the ex-Blackburn player has featured in each of those three fixtures, including even starting twice, while showing signs of real potential at La Liga level.
He came off the bench in their impressive 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, before starting in a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad and a 1-0 win over Osasuna.
Dolan's 45 minutes against Diego Simeone's side, in which he created one chance, earning him a starting berth against Real Sociedad, where he featured for 85 minutes.
The forward created six shots against Sergio Francisco's team, before creating another two more in his 78 minutes against Osasuna prior to the September international break.
Dolan is proving an important part of the side as they make a strong start to the new campaign, with the team fifth in the table during the September international break.
He signed a three-year contract with Espanyol, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2028, and he has made a promising start to life in Spain.
With Dolan seemingly cementing his place as a starter in Manolo Gonzalez’s first team plans, he could be in line for a very busy September.
The Spanish top flight will return to action this weekend after the international break, and Espanyol will face a tough challenge with a trip to face giants Real Madrid.
The allure of a move to the continent was a chance to play against some of the best players in the world, and that will include many in Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Following the trip to the Bernabéu, Dolan will be hoping to start when Espanyol host a Valencia side on the rise.
He will come against a relatively familiar face on 23 September when former West Brom and Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan brings his side to the RCDE Stadium.
Espanyol will also face Girona before the end of the month, which will be Dolan’s first opportunity to play in a Catalan derby.
