It was a dismal campaign for the Saints, who became the earliest side in Premier League history to be relegated, and they had to battle to avoid breaking Derby County’s all-time lowest points record.

As you would expect, there were managerial changes, as Ivan Juric succeeded Russell Martin, although he didn’t make the impact many expected, before the ex-Roma chief was replaced by Simon Rusk once relegation was confirmed for the run-in.

Will Still starts work at Southampton FC

Since Juric’s departure, attention has turned to who will lead the team for the Championship 25/26 season, and it was announced that Still had been appointed, with the 32-year-old watching on as Arsenal beat Southampton on the final day.

Still's arrival was seen as a real coup for the south coast outfit, as he has a good reputation following his work in France with Reims and Lens.

And, taking to Instagram, the club shared an insight into Still’s first day on the job, as they took fans behind the scenes, as they showed the boss conducting his first interview, meeting staff and signing the contract.

Will Still is a great appointment for Southampton

As mentioned, it’s been a difficult year for all connected to Southampton, so the owners needed to make an appointment that got the supporters back onside.

Still fits the bill on that front, as he has the pull to attract players, and his coaching experience in the top-flight of France suggests he will be good enough for the Championship.

However, if he is to be successful, Still will need support in the market, and it will be interesting to see how the squad is reshaped over the coming months, as it’s clear that work needs to be done.

There will be some financial implications from relegation, and there are doubts over the future of Aaron Ramsdale, Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling, among others.

But the fact Still agreed to join Southampton shows he is on the same page as the owners in terms of the owners, and he will have big ambitions at the club, which will include taking them back to the Premier League and establishing Saints at that level.
