HSV beat Werder Bremen in race to sign Southampton's Damion Downs

Former 1. FC Köln forward Damion Downs is on the verge of a return to Germany.

According to Bild, Hamburger SV are set to sign the 21-year-old on loan from Southampton, with an option to buy worth €10 million.

Werder Bremen have also showed interest in Downs, but now appear to have lost out in the race to sign the striker.

If everything goes according to plan, the US international will undergo his medical with HSV on Tuesday.

Southampton paid a reported €8 million to sign Downs from 1. FC Köln last summer.
