Merlin Polzin made an unexpected change between the sticks as Sander Tangvik came on for his debut. The 23-year-old goalkeeper signed from Rosenborg to replace Daniel Peretz in January.

The Norwegian was the star of the first-half, which started with his save from Exequiel Palacios’ effort. Hamburg had the better chances after that as they looked to end their campaign with three successive wins.

However, the best chance of the half came at the other end when Jordan Torunarigha conceded a penalty-kick for a foul on Patrik Schick in the 25th minute. The Czech striker took the responsibility, but Tangvik was there to deny him. HSV’s debutant has only conceded six of 11 penalties he faced in Eliteserien.

The visitors ended the half brightly, but they didn’t do enough to break the deadlock. “The man of the hour” added another save just before heading to the tunnel to thwart Malik Tillmann. HSV continued to build confidence as they took the lead at the hour mark.

Fabio Vieira scored a brilliant goal in what could very well be his last appearance for the club. Tangvik’s impressive debut didn’t result in a clean sheet, however. Nicolai Remberg beat his own goalkeeper when he tried to clear Jarell Quansah’s header in the 78th minute.

Leverkusen increased their pressure in the closing stages, but they couldn’t find the winning goal due to poor finishing and Tangvik’s “Man of the Match” performance.

Kasper Hjulmand is not expected to stay at the helm after a disappointing sixth-place finish for Leverkusen. HSV’s return to Bundesliga concluded with a 13th-place finish with 38 points.
