The striker finishes his career with 220 league goals, making him the third-highest scorer in the top four divisions of English football over the past 20 years.

Only Billy Sharp and Harry Kane have more with 259 and 227 goals respectively.

Perhaps his best season on a personal note came during 11/12 with the Terriers, where he broke the club's record by scoring 36 league goals in the third-tier - and he netted in his first 13 games of that season.

The Scotland international's exploits at Town led to his £8m move to Blackburn in 2012, which made him English football's most expensive player outside the top-flight at the time.

Both clubs were quick to pay tribute to their former striker following his announcement.

Huddersfield Town's statement described Rhodes as " a legend in West Yorkshire" who "will forever be remembered by Town fans for his incredible contributions over two spells at the club."

Blackburn Rovers announced that Rhodes would be returning to Ewood Park in a new role as the club's loan manager. The Lancashire club also noted him as "the Championship's second-highest all-time goalscorer", whilst praising his "sensational spell" at Rovers.

Rhodes said it was "great to be back" at the club and "I really enjoy being here" in an interview on his return to Blackburn.

Even when playing for other times - the likes of Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday - the striker was warmly received by fans at both grounds.

Just like their clubs, the reaction from both sets of supporters has been nothing but positive - and some even described him as a "legend."

Huddersfield fan Joe, replying to the X post, declared "My first Town hero with a blue heart. Forever a legend. Hope he joins the club again in some form. Hero."

Fellow Terriers fan Chris echoed this sentiment by writing, " Legend is an overused statement in football. However, this is a proper, undisputed legend of Huddersfield Town. All the best for whatever comes next."

The admiration wasn't confined to Kirklees, of course, with Blackburn fans equally full of praise for Rhodes. Kal posted, "My hero forever and always."

While another went as far as to say Rhodes was his "favourite striker since Alan Shearer," the latter scored 130 goals in 171 appearances for Rovers before a then world-record fee of £15m saw him join Newcastle United.

As the 35-year-old transitions into his new role at Blackburn, praise from both of these clubs - where he arguably enjoyed his best football - is a testament to his finishing on the pitch.
