Chelsea midfielder Leo Castledine is set to join Huddersfield Town on loan for the season.
Huddersfield Town are reportedly closing in on the signing of Chelsea midfielder Leo Castledine.
That's according to The Mirror, who claim that Castledine has agreed to join Huddersfield on a season-long loan from Chelsea as their ambitious summer recruitment drive continues.
Castledine has progressed through the Chelsea academy since joining the club from AFC Wimbledon in 2020, and he has made one senior appearance for the Premier League giants so far, as well as being included in the matchday squad on a number of other occasions.
The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town as they were relegated from League One, but while his time in Shropshire was cut short by injury, it seems his performances caught the eye of sides from across the EFL.
Castledine is believed to have been on the radar of a host of Championship and League One sides this summer, but he has now decided to join the Terriers in what is another big coup for the club.
Huddersfield finished in a disappointing 10th place in League One last season in their first year back in the division, but new manager Lee Grant has been given strong backing by owner Kevin Nagle in the transfer market this summer as they look to climb the table in the upcoming campaign.
The Terriers have already brought in 11 new signings this summer, with Owen Goodman, Lynden Gooch, Joe Low, Sean Roughan, Josh Feeney, Jack Whatmough, Murray Wallace, Ryan Ledson, Marcus McGuane, Marcus Harness and Alfie May all arriving at the Accu Stadium, but it seems they are not done just yet, and Castledine is expected to become their latest new addition.
Despite playing in a Shrewsbury side that spent much of last season in the relegation zone, Castledine impressed on an individual level before his loan spell at the Croud Meadow was cut short by a back injury he sustained in January that kept him out for the remainder of the campaign.
With his first-team opportunities limited at Chelsea, Castledine is believed to have been open to the idea of a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge this summer, but he will instead depart on loan, and Huddersfield have fought off competition from Championship clubs and some of their League One promotion rivals to land his signature.
It appears Castledine's move to West Yorkshire is at an advanced stage, and the Terriers are expected to officially announce the signing of the England Under-19 international before they get their season underway at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday.
It is fair to say that Huddersfield have done some outstanding transfer business this summer, and Castledine will be another strong signing for the club.
Castledine may have spent last season at the bottom end of League One with Shrewsbury, but he is a highly-rated player with a lot of potential, and his previous experience of the division will help him to hit the ground running with the Terriers in a campaign where they are widely expected to challenge for the title.
After strengthening their defence and attack earlier in the window, Castledine will help to bolster Town's midfield even further following the arrival of Marcus McGuane from Bristol City last week, and with the start of the new season now just days away, it is difficult to see too many weaknesses in their squad.
