Alfie May scored for the first time since August in the draw against AFC Wimbledon

Huddersfield Town's 3-3 draw against AFC Wimbledon was truly entertaining, and it ended with Alfie May picking up his first goal since August 23 to secure a point.

It was a tough couple of months for the Terriers across September and October. Manager Lee Grant wasn't able to get a tune out of what is, on paper, a very strong side off the back of a very strong summer transfer window, bookmarked by the £1.2 million arrival of May.

The 32-year-old had made a name for himself by scoring goals in League One for several years, but after two goals in his opening five, May struggled to find the net, and Huddersfield struggled to pick up wins.

His frustrations were on show when he was sent off after 25 minutes in a 3-0 loss against Wycombe Wanderers, a loss which forced Grant to make some changes at the top end of the pitch as his job came under pressure.

In May's absence, out of favour duo Dion Charles and Bojan Radulovic were given starts in the following League One outings against Plymouth Argyle and Mansfield Town, and they both cropped up with goals to deliver big wins for Grant and Huddersfield.

But now the 32-year-old is back and seemingly hungry for goals and his place back in the team once more - and he's now created a huge dilemma for Grant in the dugout.

This season is so far turning out to be one of the least productive of May's career, following on from four straight 16-plus goal campaigns in League One with Cheltenham Town, Charlton Athletic and then Birmingham City.

Birmingham bought May to simply help them earn promotion to the Championship, given his scoring record in prior third-tier seasons, and Huddersfield had felt that they could do the same.

Because of this, many believed that the 32-year-old's position in the starting line-up was incredibly secure, as even if he goes through a rough patch in front of goal, he always has that scoring nous to create something out of nothing.

May went eight appearances without scoring before he was sent off in the defeat to Wycombe, and of those eight, he started six, as Huddersfield lost five.

However, the idea that the 32-year-old is the first name on the team-sheet no matter what hasn't been the case since his return from suspension, as his replacements did enough in his absence to nail down their spots since.

Charles and Radulovic were brought in from the wilderness to partner up top against Plymouth, and both contributed massively in their 3-1 win. They both then picked up more goals in the following game, as the Terriers blew Mansfield away at the One Call Stadium.

Since May returned to action against Luton Town, he's had to deal with being a substitute, but with the pressure on to regain his spot in the side, he seems to be thriving, netting the equaliser in Saturday's draw with AFC Wimbledon.

After a red-hot couple of games, Radulovic and Charles haven't scored or assisted in their last two, and with May coming on from the bench to score, it might not be long until the 32-year-old takes his place back.

Lee Grant will have to decide who has to make way for a returning Alfie May

With how Lee Grant sets Huddersfield up, May can operate both as the main focal point up front or as the man playing just off the striker, so a straight positional swap for either Charles or Radulovic isn't as easy as it sounds.

In the games against Luton and Wimbledon, it's been Charles who has given way for the 32-year-old, with Radulovic staying on for longer and even completing the full game in the 3-3 draw with the Dons.

So, early intuitions would suggest that it'd be the Northern Irishman who drops to the bench as and when May comes back, but if Lee Grant decides to play the former Birmingham striker further forward, it could see the 25-year-old Serbian pave the way.

It's a selection headache that Grant will welcome, as all three have shown recently that they know where the back of the net is, and the Terriers boss will be relying on his goalscorers to fire his side up the League One table over the busy Christmas period.
