Huddersfield Town have been told to make a tough call regarding manager Lee Grant.

The Terriers headed into this season as one of the favourites to achieve promotion out of League One, due to the impressive business they managed to complete over the summer.

Players such as Ryan Ledson, Alfie May and Murray Wallace were all brought to the Accu Stadium, building excitement among the Town fanbase that they would be one of the third-tier’s most competitive sides.

There was a new face in the dugout too, with Lee Grant given his maiden first-team manager role in professional football. With plenty to be optimistic about, it seemed like Huddersfield supporters were in for an enjoyable ride.

After winning four of their first five league matches, it seemed like the Terriers had confirmed their pre-season status as promotion contenders. However, things didn’t continue so smoothly.

Grant’s side have only won four of their next 15 league matches, which has seen them slip away from the promotion battle. As a result, pressure has started to pile upon Town’s inexperienced manager.

On paper, Huddersfield Town should be competing towards the top of the division, after recruiting so heavily during the summer.

However, sides such as Bradford City, Stevenage and Lincoln City have all performed much better without spending anywhere near as much as the Terriers, which has led to fingers being pointed at Grant.

The 42-year-old has no other experience as a first-team manager, which has shown at times during this season. With January approaching, Football League World’s Huddersfield Town fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, believes that the club must decide on their manager’s future before promotion becomes unachievable.

“Lee Grant is a new, inexperienced manager,” stated Graeme. “He's never managed first-team football professionally before and that shows.

“League One is a horrible league, and it is a league we don't want to be in. It's a league we currently deserve to be in and we want to get out of it as soon as we can. We know from experience that it can take a long time. If you don't get out of it quickly, you can languish in League One for a while.

“You'd love to have great football and great results, but you need, at the very least, results and we're simply not getting them. We're not getting the results that our squad and structure should theoretically get.

“The main reason for that, in my opinion, is that Lee Grant hasn't managed to implement a clear, structured system, way of playing, ethos, culture, whatever you want to call it.

“I don't like to see managers losing their jobs. I don't like to see clubs sacking managers quickly and often, which is something we have done.

“We need to get out of this division. If we went on a ten-game run where we won seven of those games and drew a couple of the others, we'd be in the top two or three, based on how things have gone so far.

“But we're not capable of doing that at the moment. So, the owner has to ask himself, how much longer is he prepared to go? Because my view is, if we're still in this position in January, Grant is gone, by which time it's probably too late to implement a change, and then we write off another season. So, yeah, I am feeling disappointed, despondent, and dismayed.”

Lee Grant may be on borrowed time at Huddersfield Town

It won’t be lost on the higher-ups at Huddersfield Town how much they invested in their squad during the summer, especially when results on the pitch have been less than ideal.

Clearly, the goal was for the Yorkshire outfit to fight towards the promotion-paying positions, but that hasn’t happened and may soon not even be a possibility.

Grant looks like he may be running out of ideas and has yet to find a system to stick to that he can continue to develop throughout the campaign.

If performances don’t pick up in the next few matches heading into the New Year, there may be no other option but for Huddersfield to part ways with the 42-year-old.
