Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick should be able to rely on Matthijs de Ligt sooner rather than later.
The Dutchman has been a stalwart at the back for the Red Devils since making the move from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024.
The 27-year-old performed admirably under Ruben Amorim at the start of the previous campaign, but he has been ruled out of action since November 2025.
The defender initially opted for alternative therapy to treat his back injury, but eventually succumbed to surgery in May.

After 10 months on the sidelines, De Ligt returned to action on Friday as Man Utd hosted INEOS-owned Swiss club FC Lausanne-Sport for a friendly behind closed doors at Carrington.
In addition to the Dutch defender, United’s big summer signing, Carlos Baleba, also took part in the contest that ended with a 2-1 win for the Red Devils thanks to Victor Musah’s brace.
This was revealed by Carrington insider Sully, who reported the game’s outcome. On Monday, the journalist dropped a new update on Manchester United’s Round Table on De Ligt’s condition.
The source insists that the Netherlands international has ‘shined’ in training and has ‘looked’ good since his return to the pitch.
Therefore, all signs suggest that De Ligt will be called up for next Saturday’s clash against Tottenham.

Since taking over from Amorim in January, Michael Carrick identified Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire as his two main options at the back.
But this season, the experienced duo haven’t been as solid as they were last season, while Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro have yet to make the required jump in quality to earn a starting role.
So despite having four other options at his disposal, Carrick would certainly relish De Ligt’s return, as the Dutchman had been ‘fantastic’ before his injury.
De Ligt’s good form in training is a positive sign, but it remains to be seen whether he can immediately regain his post-injury form almost one year after his stoppage.
