Hugo Cuypers finished the season with 27 goals to take the golden boot. Furthermore, he becomes the first Belgian to lead the league in scoring since a teenage Romelu Lukaku in 2009/2010. Playing for Anderlecht at the time, Lukaku grabbed 15 goals during that season.
Cuypers 27 league goals for Gent makes puts him third in terms of most goals in a season since the turn of the millenium. Genk’s Wesley Sonck scored 30 during the 2001/2002 season, while recently Paul Onuachu set a record with 33 goals for the same club during the 2020/2021 season.
The 26-year-old ended the season in scintillating form to beat Ayase Ueda of Cercle Brugge to the title, with seven goals in six play-off matches. Cuypers only joined Gent in the summer from Mechelen, where he had scored 13 goals in 36 games. With European and cup football this year, the striker has grabbed 34 goals in 56 games. This is the first time has has gone past the magic 20 mark since playing for Ergotelis in Greece during the 2017/2018 season.
