Hugo Ekitike, the Liverpool and France forward, attended Reims v Annecy on Monday while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. According to L'Équipe, the 24-year-old was present at the Ligue 2 match.
It was a little over four months since he suffered the injury, and he has not yet played again. This was a first public return to the pitch.
Formed at Reims, where he spent 10 years from 2013 to 2023, he returned at the club’s invitation.
The France striker, capped eight times with two goals and ruled out of the World Cup, received a warm ovation from the Champagne crowd.
Before kick-off he acted as capo, drumming to lift the noise, then took the ceremonial first kick. A return to action with the Reds is hoped by the end of the year.
