An agreement between the two clubs has been reached and the 23-year-old is expected to finalise the deal before flying out to join his new team-mates in Hong Kong.

The Athletic report that Liverpool will pay an initial £69m fee, with potentially a further £10m to be paid in add-ons.

Ekitike, who has made five appearances for the France U21 side but has not been capped at senior level, is expected to sign a six-year contract.

The striker had been targeted by Newcastle but the Magpies opted not to pursue the transfer after an initial £65m bid was rejected.

Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 appearances for Frankfurt last season, in what was the best goal-scoring campaign of his career to date.

His arrival continues a big summer of spending for Premier League champions Liverpool.

Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have already been signed, while goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has officially joined up with the club.

Liverpool start their pre-season tour on Saturday with a fixture against AC Milan, before they face Yokohama FM on July 30.

Arne Slot’s side will then return home for a double-header against Athletic Bilbao on August 4, with the first match taking place at 5pm and the second at 8pm.

The Reds will turn their focus a week later to the Community Shield and the chance of a first trophy of the season, when they take on Crystal Palace at Wembley on August 10.
