Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike is out of this summer’s World Cup after being carried off in tears against PSG in the Champions League.

According to Le Parisien, the 23-year-old has ruptured his right Achilles tendon. He was injured during Liverpool’s quarter-final second leg, which PSG won 2-0.

He went down after pushing off, immediately clutching the lower right calf, and was removed on a stretcher on 30 minutes. The exact extent, whether partial or complete, remains to be confirmed with further tests.

Arne Slot said the injury was quite serious after Liverpool were eliminated by PSG.

The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ekitike’s season ended on Tuesday and he now faces a lengthy lay-off. The France international has eight caps and two goals.

Randal Kolo Muani appears the leading contender to replace him in France’s squad, and he has Didier Deschamps’ trust.
