Vasco midfielder Hugo Moura has visited 18-year-old supporter Arthur Cortines Laxe in hospital after the fan lost sight in his right eye when he was hit by a rubber bullet outside the Maracanã following Sunday’s match against Flamengo. The visit took place at Casa de Saúde São José in Humaitá.

According to Globo.com, the midfielder, who scored with the last kick to secure a 2-2 draw, contacted Arthur’s family to visit.

The family say Arthur will need at least three operations, including plastic surgery and one for a broken nose. They have criticised the police response, and the Military Police have opened an investigation.

Arthur says a military police officer fired as he tried to leave amid disorder between organised groups. He says he was not involved and was struck in the face. He adds that pleas for help to riot police were ignored, and that a taxi driver assisted.

His mother, Christiane Cortines, says he was covered in blood and was again told to go away when seeking help. The family want accountability and compensation.

The Military Police said about 800 officers were on duty and 15 arrests were made. They confirmed a man was injured by an elastomer round and assisted, and an internal inquiry has begun. Most trouble came after full-time around the stadium.

Elsewhere, two more fans, one from each club, were beaten unconscious nearby, one robbed of a watch, and both remain stable in Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar, with one named as Hiata André Barbosa.
