Hugo Souza was subjected to racist abuse from Portuguesa supporters after Corinthians won 8-7 on penalties in the Campeonato Paulista quarter-final at Canindé on Sunday night.
According to Jovem Pan Esportes, video footage showed the goalkeeper being insulted as he left the pitch for the tunnel after interviews, with at least two home fans calling him favelado and piolhento, telling him to cut his hair and calling him toothless.
Despite a police presence, the pair persisted until another supporter intervened and the incident ended once Hugo Souza entered the tunnel. It was not recorded in the match report as it occurred minutes after full time, with referee Raphael Claus and his team already off the pitch.
On the pitch it finished 1-1. In the first half Hugo Souza saved a penalty from Renê before Zé Vitor put the hosts ahead. In stoppage time Vitinho met a Matheuzinho cross, beat Zé Vitor and rifled into the top corner to force penalties.
After nine kicks each, Corinthians took the shootout 8-7, with Hugo Souza saving twice more, from Renê and then Cauari.
Corinthians will face Novorizontino in the semi-finals at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi, the Jojão, in Novo Horizonte next weekend, with the date to be confirmed. On the other side Palmeiras meet São Paulo. Before that, at 20:00 on Wednesday, Dorival Júnior's side visit Cruzeiro at the Mineirão in the fourth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
