It was another bitterly disappointing display on Saturday afternoon from Sheffield United as they lost 1-0 away at Hull City.

The only goal of the game came from David Akintola when his 30th minute effort took a wicked deflection at the far post and flew into the top right corner. United had a chance to equalise late in the game from the penalty spot, but Harrison Burrows’ effort was tame and was easily read by the Hull goalkeeper.

The Blades started brightly, with Gustavo Hamer curling an early free-kick narrowly wide from 25 yards. However, the hosts were dealt an early setback when former United midfielder John Lundstram was forced off after just 14 minutes with what appeared to be a calf injury.

Hull’s first real threat came through another ex-Blade, Regan Slater, whose low drive deflected wide off Mark McGuinness. But it was United who looked the more dangerous side, and Hamer came agonisingly close to giving them the lead midway through the half. The midfielder’s powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box rattled the near post, leaving the home crowd relieved.

Moments later, Hull took the lead somewhat against the run of play. Lewie Coyle’s cross from the right found Akintola at the far post, and the winger showed composure to chest the ball down before his shot deflected off of Ogbene and wrong-footed Michael Cooper for his first goal in Hull colours.

United continued to press before the break, with young midfielder Sydie Peck heading over from a deep Hamer free-kick five minutes before half-time.

Second Half

After the interval, Hull looked more composed but rarely threatened until the latter stages. Former Blade Oli McBurnie almost punished his old club early in the second half when he intercepted a loose Ben Mee pass, but his outside-foot effort was comfortably saved by Cooper.

As the game wore on, the Blades pushed for an equaliser. Tyrese Campbell was handed a golden chance inside the final 20 minutes after Hull carelessly gave the ball away, but Charlie Hughes recovered superbly to deflect his shot behind for a corner.

The visitors piled on late pressure, with Hamer again going close and a chaotic goalmouth scramble, involving substitute Tom Davies among others, somehow staying out.

Their best opportunity came two minutes from time when substitute Semi Ajayi brought down Campbell in the box. However, substitute Harrison Burrows’ tame spot-kick was saved by Pandur, who guessed correctly to his right and preserved Hull’s slender advantage.

Sheffield United head into the international break still sitting at the foot of the Championship table and there’s not much signs of improvement from an attacking point of view.
