The 25-year-old joined the Robins in the summer of 2024 on an initial loan, before the deal became permanent ahead of the current campaign.

Hirakawa has featured regularly for Bristol City in that period, although he perhaps hasn’t had the number of starts he would’ve wanted, with the majority of his minutes coming from the bench.

Hull City set to sign Yu Hirakawa on loan from Bristol City

Even though Hirakawa came on in Bristol City’s draw at Oxford United on Saturday, it appears that could be his last game for the club this season.

That’s after journalist Mike White revealed that a loan move to the Tigers is set to be completed, with boss Sergej Jakirovic later stating that he believes Hirakawa’s arrival will be announced over the weekend, and he is going to be joined by Man Utd’s Toby Collyer.

That will be a major relief for Hull, as they have been working on ways to strengthen the squad during the window, with Jakirovic having to deal with plenty of absentees through injury.

Despite that, Hull still managed to pick up a fantastic three points against Southampton, a result which saw them jump up to fifth in the Championship.

Yu Hirakawa will provide added depth to Hull City

Firstly, this is a slightly surprising move in the sense that both clubs have ambitions of reaching the play-offs, so some will question why Bristol City are prepared to help Hull out.

But, it does look like a decent bit of business from the Tigers, and Hirakawa will provide the team with a much-needed option in the final third, and he is capable of playing in different roles.

You wouldn’t expect Hirakawa to force his way into the starting XI on a regular basis, and Hull fans may be underwhelmed when they look at his goal contributions since joining Bristol City, but he will be a valuable option in the squad.

As for Bristol City, this deal will free up a space in the squad, along with some funds from the wage bill, so it should give Gerhard Struber the scope to bring in his own players.

Like Hull, they are facing a massive final few weeks of the window, and Struber will know that he needs reinforcements if Bristol City are to secure a top-six finish come May.
