Hull City are planning a move for John Lundstram despite EFL imposed transfer embargo
Hull City are eyeing a move for ex-Rangers and Sheffield United player John Lundstram this summer.
According to Alan Nixon, the Tigers are hoping they can seal a deal for the midfielder, provided they will be allowed to make signings.
The EFL imposed a three-window embargo on the club earlier this transfer market due to their failure to pay a £1 million loan fee to Aston Villa for Louie Barry.
However, the Yorkshire outfit are reportedly looking to appeal the decision, which currently does not allow them to pay a fee to sign a player until January 2027.
Hull are currently looking to line up deals in the event that their appeal of their transfer embargo is successful.
As part of those plans, it is understood that the club are keen to bring Lundstram back to English football.
It’s also been claimed that his wages could prove a stumbling block to any deal given what he is paid by Trabzonspor at the moment.
According to estimated figures from Capology, the 31-year-old receives £41,657 per week from the Turkish club.
However, the club are hopeful of still completing a deal, should the appeal of their embargo be successful.
New manager Sergej Jakirovic is hoping to build a team capable of improving on the Tigers’ disappointing 21st place finish in the Championship last season.
Lundstram spent four seasons at Bramall Lane, helping the club gain promotion from the Championship to the Premier League under Chris Wilder.
He featured 46 times in the second tier, before making a further 62 appearances in the Premier League for the Blades before making the switch to Rangers in 2021.
Rangers finished second in the Premiership in each of his three years at Ibrox, which led to a move to Trabzonspor in 2024, where he played 32 times last season.
Lundstram has a contract with Trabzonspor until the summer of 2027.
Hull are doing the right thing by lining up these kinds of moves in the even their transfer embargo is lifted.
Lundstram has good Championship experience, and knows what it takes to play at the highest level of English football.
While his wages are a concern, and the Tigers shouldn’t be spending too heavily on someone at the age of 31, he could be a valuable addition to the dressing room at the right price.
It remains to be seen what the immediate future holds for Hull’s transfer business, but it is encouraging that they are lining up these moves, and it potentially indicates an optimism that their appeal will be successful.
