Hull City produced a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United on their return to the Premier League.
The newly promoted Tigers started brightly and were rewarded in the 17th minute. Oli McBurnie’s header was kept out by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who then turned the striker’s follow-up onto the post. The loose ball fell kindly to Semi Ajayi, who reacted quickest to fire Hull in front.
United struggled to find a response and were punished again just before half-time. Regan Slater’s excellent free-kick picked out Nobel Mendy, with the Hull debutant rising highest to head beyond Lammens and double the hosts’ advantage.
Michael Carrick introduced Marcus Rashford at the interval as the Red Devils looked to rescue something from the match, but Hull remained disciplined and dangerous on the counter.
The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession but rarely threatened Konstantinos Tzolakis, who made a handful of important saves, including a late stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo.
Hull defended resolutely in the closing stages to complete a memorable victory on their Premier League return after nine years away.
For United, the defeat represents a major early setback and means they have lost their opening league fixture in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1973.
