Hull City travel to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday looking to book a place in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with the Tigers currently sitting third in the Premier League after an unbeaten start to life back in the top flight.

Reaching round four would take Sergej Jakirovic’s side further than they have gone in the competition since 2016-17. That table position has come with a cost, however, as Hull head into this tie with a lengthy list of absentees to negotiate.

Hull’s injury list for this trip is a lengthy one. Jack Butland, Oscar Zambrano, Charlie Hughes, Darko Gyabi and Hidemasa Morita are all unavailable. Paddy McNair’s involvement is also in doubt; assistant head coach Dean Holden said on Monday that the club were still waiting on the results of a foot scan on the defender.

Joe Gelhardt has returned to full training and adds to the options available to Jakirovic, alongside deadline-day arrivals Tim Iroegbunam, Robinio Vaz, Sorba Thomas and Brooke Norton-Cuffy. Matt Crooks and Iroegbunam were due to train on Monday and are expected to be included in the travelling squad.

Norton-Cuffy could come in at right wing-back ahead of Lewie Coyle, while Thomas — still eligible having played for previous club Stoke City in the second round — remains a doubt to start; Holden said it was “too early to say” whether he would feature.
