València held a funeral today for the four victims of December’s boat tragedy in Indonesia, including coach Fernando Martín Carreras and three children, at the San José Escrivá parish in Campanar.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, hundreds attended the noon service, among them Pilar Bernabé, mayor María José Catalá, Juan Carlos Valderrama, Susana Camarero, Llanos Massó, and representatives of Valencia with players from the women’s B team he coached.

Before the ceremony, Álvaro Ortuño, brother of survivor Andrea Ortuño, delivered a family message that set a reflective, emotional tone. It thanked security forces, consular staff, institutions including Pilar, María José and Juanfran, the media, and friends near and far, including in Uruguay, ending with “teri makasih”.

The families said they were saying goodbye with immense pain yet some serenity, and pledged to seek calm justice without hatred or rancour to honour the victims and move forward with dignity.

The service brought together the four families directly affected, including those of Fernando and his wife, and the parents of the three children, Lía, Quique and Mateo. Friends, classmates, sports colleagues and neighbours joined them.

Martín Carreras died with children aged nine, 10 and 12 when a hired tourist boat sank on 26 December at night near Padar. A week before today’s service, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency ended the search for 10-year-old Quique, announcing the decision from Labuan Bajo. Andrea Ortuño has since returned to València after remaining in Indonesia throughout the operation.
