A hugely concerning account of developments in the stands during Sunday’s Madrid Derby has today come to the fore online.
The season’s first meeting between the Spanish capital’s two leading clubs – Real and Atlético – was of course played to completion late last night.
A fiery 90 minutes ultimately saw the spoils shared between the sides, Éder Militão’s 2nd-half opener cancelled out deep into injury time by Ángel Correa.
And yet, post-match, it was not the result which found itself front and centre in the headlines.
Instead, as much were dominated by ongoings in the stands at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Shortly after Real Madrid opened the scoring on Sunday, both sets of players were sent back to their dressing rooms by referee Mateo Busquets.
This came after Blancos no.1 Thibaut Courtois was the target of a range of projectiles thrown by Atlético’s supporters in the stand behind his goal.
As much came amid a tense atmosphere in Madrid, which threatened to boil over at a moment’s notice throughout.
And now, one individual to have been in attendance at the Metropolitano has provided his account of the frankly disgusting scenes to have played out last night.
The individual in question, posting to his account ‘Jordan13ajo’ on Instagram, unveiled a lengthy message, detailing the racial abuse directed at Real Madrid star Vinícius Jr:
‘Tonight I experienced the worst match of my life, not on a football level but on a human level. Hundreds of Atlético Madrid fans chanting “m*nkey” to Viní Jr and making m*nkey cries accompanied by disgusting racist insults, both by adults and small children…. I have never in my life felt so bad, the atmosphere was so annoying…. I’m still stunned to have lived this… Racism is a scourge that must be severely punished. It has no place anywhere. We are with you Viní Jr.’
