Hungary and Portugal go head-to-head in World Cup qualification on Tuesday. Both sides will be looking to make their mark in Group F, with Portugal aiming to maintain their perfect start and Hungary seeking redemption after a disappointing draw with Ireland.
Hungary will be forced to make at least one change after Roland Sallai received a straight red card in their dramatic 2-2 draw with Ireland in Dublin. The Galatasaray forward scored Hungary’s second goal before his rash challenge on Dara O’Shea led to his dismissal in the 52nd minute, ruling him out of Tuesday’s crucial clash.
Manager Marco Rossi faces mounting pressure after his side threw away a two-goal lead against Ireland. Despite taking a 2-0 advantage through Barnabás Varga and Sallai within the first 15 minutes, Hungary collapsed in the second half, ultimately settling for a point.
Liverpool captain Dominik Szoboszlai will continue to lead Hungary’s midfield, partnering with West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Styles. Barnabás Varga, who has been in excellent form for Ferencváros with 10 goals in 11 games this season, will spearhead the attack.
Portugal arrive in Budapest brimming with confidence after their stunning 5-0 victory over Armenia in Yerevan. Cristiano Ronaldo was the star of the show, scoring twice to take his international tally to 140 goals, moving him closer to the historic 1,000-goal career milestone.
The 40-year-old legend opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a neat finish before adding a spectacular long-range effort just 45 seconds into the second half. João Félix also impressed with a double, while João Cancelo completed the rout.
Roberto Martínez’s squad is missing Rafael Leão due to a calf injury and Diogo Dalot with a muscle problem. However, the coach has a wealth of attacking options at his disposal, with Bruno Fernandes returning to the starting lineup after missing recent Nations League matches.
Hungary’s recent form makes for concerning reading, with just one win in their last five competitive fixtures. Their inability to see out games has become a worrying trend, having conceded late equalisers in crucial moments.
Portugal is riding high on a four-match winning streak across all competitions. Their Nations League triumph earlier this summer, where they defeated Spain 5-3 on penalties in the final, has given the squad tremendous momentum heading into World Cup qualifying where Portugal started their campaign with a thumping win against Armenia (5-0).
